I am a qualified City & Guilds Carpenter to the level of Advanced Craft & Licentiate in Carpentry & Joinery.
I’ve been in involved in Carpentry & Joinery for over 30 years and have experience working at different levels from being an apprentice carpenter to running my own business. One of my favourite studies has been Roof Carpentry this is a subject that I’m passionate about because it involves angles, maths, geometry and of course all the physical and practical methods that combine all of this together. I’ve encountered many challenges and problems over the years and I believe that I can assist, encourage and mentor others to build and expand their knowledge and skill set.

These lessons will mainly involve doing roof calculations using metric measurements and degrees. For example depending on what level you are at, you can start off learning how to calculate a pair of Common Rafters let’s say for a shed or a garage. You may want to learn how to calculate Rafter Lengths and angles for a house with a Gable Roof with Purlins. Then move on to calculate lengths and angles for a Hip and Valley Roof that would include Jack Rafter side cuts and diminish. Hip and Valley lengths, deductions, side cuts and backing bevels. Others may want to go further and learn about unequal pitch Hip Roofs that have an equal soffit distance.
Some people refer to this type of Roof as an irregular or bastard Hip Roof.
